Restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a poorly understood disease affecting the life of people with various medical conditions including
iron deficiency (ID).

Experimental findings suggests a role of the histamine-induced microglial activation in the etiology of RLS. [1]

Main findings :

1. Low ferritin levels (<70) is a marker of impaired iron/O2 transport in red blood cells. Furthermore histamine-induced inflammation may promote microglial activation and dysregulate dopamine activity in RLS. [2] Consequently, restless legs syndrome is a pathological disorder associated with persistent neuroimmune cell activation.

2. New findings suggests that carotenoids may act as selective histamine (H3R) antagonists and enhance iron homeostasis and transport in the etiology of restless legs syndrome (RLS) :
